Pamela's Story

Life It all started when I was born, although some family and friends question that I was born and not just beamed here. I had a good childhood and was raised by my Mother and step-father who were the best anyone could ask for. I attended SLPS which were excellent at that time. I had a full four year scholarship and planned to become a French teacher. However, instead I married and subsequently had four children and seven grandchildren. Through the years, I took college classes that totalled approximately three years but never went on to get my degree. My first marriage ended in divorce. I married again but sadly after 10 years my second husband passed away. He had a profound effect on my life. I held various jobs from age 14 on...babysitting, confectionary helper, FW Woolworth, five years with a temporary service giving me a lot of different experiences. Then I went to work for St. Louis Board of Education as an entry level clerk typist. My first job was at Southwest High School, which is the school I graduated from. It was strange to come back as part of the administration instead of the student population. Over the years I received promotions and upgrades until 1983 when I became Secretary to the Principal at Cleveland High School. The school was closed as a general high school the next year and became Cleveland Jr. Naval Academy. I was there until June, 2003 when I finally retired. Twenty years, the school became a big part of me. I saw it flourish and saw it downslide. Saw it grow from 250 to over 1050. I had five different principals, all were different in their own right. My children all grew up and married and gave me seven grandchildren. They are all delightful. I was born and raised in St. Louis, but after my retirement I moved to Florida. I love it. ow, etc. of St. Louis. My health is not great but it is better down here. I love the scenic environment. I thought when I retired, I would vegetate. No such luck. I am busy all the time to the point I don't know where my time goes. They days just fly by. I miss my family and friends in St. LOuis, but am making new ones and of course stay in touch with those I left behind. I miss Cleveland Jr. Naval Academy. I miss the interaction with the teachers and students, but don't miss the daily grind of working. I am starting a project involving alumni of CJNA and if you read this and are an alumni of CJNA please contact me. If you're not an alumni and want to contact me, go ahead. School Mostly I remember attending 7 different elementary schools before sixth grade. At that time I was put in "gifted classes" and attended "Big Hamilton" for two years and Dewey for eighth grade. I stayed with the same group of kids all three years and thought that was marvelous. I remember traveling to Dewey from Arsenal and Jefferson, three busses one way...the winters were brutal. I passed Roosevelt everday to go to SW to stay in the program and stay with the same group. Of course that group expanded in high school. At that time St. Louis Public Schools were excellent and I feel that I received a good education. Wish I could say the same for today's students. I received a full four year scholarship to NE University. I was going to be a French teacher. HOwever I married instead. Over the years I took classes at Meramac and University of Mo, St. Louis to approximate three years of college. I had arrangements to take a sabatical and finish but my husband's union went on strike and I had to renege. Then I had arrangements made to do same and that was the year I was divorced. I decided it was not meant to be.
